WhatsApp Web is incredibly convenient – but a large desktop screen also makes your conversations easy to read for anyone nearby. Here are five practical ways to stay private.
1. Blur sensitive content
The easiest win: blur message previews, names and photos so that nothing is readable at a glance. Our free extension WhatsApp Privacy for Web does exactly that – and reveals content when you hover over it.
2. Lock your screen when you step away
Use the system shortcut every time you leave your desk:
| Platform | Shortcut |
|---|---|
| macOS | Ctrl + Cmd + Q |
| Windows | Win + L |
| Linux (GNOME) | Super + L |
3. Close WhatsApp Web before screen sharing
Before joining a call, close the tab or switch to a dedicated browser profile for work.
4. Log out of unused sessions
Open WhatsApp on your phone, go to Linked devices, and remove any sessions you don't recognize.
5. Use keyboard shortcuts to toggle privacy
With the extension installed you can toggle blurring instantly. You can even customize it in your browser's extension shortcut settings:
